Ipsos's survey reveals about 4 billion people in more than 50 countries this year will vote in an election, and a rise in populist sentiment is likely to affect which political leaders, parties and coalitions emerge victorious.

Populism typically describes a political strategy that pits ordinary people against what’s perceived as an elite establishment. The ruling class can become a target for a variety of discontents, including dissatisfaction with economic conditions, taxes, distribution of wealth, foreign policy or a variety of social issues.
