New Corvette Will Receive Stingray Moniker

The next-generation Chevrolet Corvette will be called the 2020 Corvette Stingray, according to General Motors.

The automaker plans to reveal the vehicle to the public online this Thursday beginning at 8 p.m. PDT at the dedicated website for the vehicle, which also includes all of the teaser videos that also have been sent via email to prospective Corvette buyers and fans.

GM might have opted for the online reveal in lieu of an auto show unveiling because there are no auto shows in the summer months.

“Big auto show reveals aren’t totally dead, but increasingly automakers want to introduce vehicles their own way and in their own timing with no competition from other automakers,” Michelle Krebs, executive analyst for Autotrader, tells Marketing Daily.

A teaser video was posted Monday on social media and hints at the 12 colors in which the sports car will be available.

The Stingray returned to the showroom in 2014 after a nearly 30-year hiatus. It is considered the base trim level. Past model-year Corvettes were available in the higher performance Grand Sport, Z06 and ZR1.

Chevrolet released a 15-second teaser video on June 26 that chronicled the history and evolution of the iconic vehicle.

In April, General Motors CEO Mary Barra arrived at a New York charity event in a camouflaged prototype of the car that was driven by its chief engineer, Tadge Juechter.

The name Stingray is generally well-received and liked within the Corvette community, according to GM Authority. Although the badge has only been used twice before, it’s arguably the best-known version of the Corvette, according to Paul A. Eisenstein, publisher and editor in chief of The Detroit Bureau.
