No Golf For You! The Case For President Trump

Buried in some of the coverage of Donald Trump over the last few days was a sanction he imposed on employees of Univision: They are now banned from a golf course he owns in Miami.

This country club banishment came on the heels of Univision’s decision to withdraw from an agreement to air Trump’s “Miss USA Pageant” later this month following his now-infamous remarks about Mexican immigrants. In announcing his candidacy for president last month, Trump asserted that Mexicans who immigrate illegally into the United States are not exactly their home country’s best and brightest.

According to reports, Univision’s headquarters in Miami is adjacent to this Trump golf course called Trump National Doral. There was no word on whether there had been some groundswell of interest recently on the part of Univision employees to play a few rounds at Trump National Doral or if any of them are current or prospective members.

This novel punishment -- so refreshing in its originality -- is likely the kind of action we could look forward to in a Donald Trump administration. Imagine the look on Vladimir Putin’s face when he hears he’s barred from Trump golf courses around the globe. Can you think of a more effective way to bring the Russian president to heel than to restrict his golf playing to non-Trump courses?

The Trump Golf Sanction is reason No. 1 to support Trump’s candidacy for president. Here are a few others:

He means what he says and he says what he means. I realize this is what Chris Christie said yesterday as part of his own speech announcing that he’s running for president too. But it’s something he has in common with Trump, even if Trump doesn’t quite put it the same way.

For example, Trump is not backing down at all from what he said about Mexican immigrants, particularly the part in which he said many of them are rapists.

Tuesday night on “The O’Reilly Factor” on Fox News Channel, Trump tried to explain what he was talking about when he made that remark. To illustrate this point, he brandished a document he said was a report from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security that found a very high incidence of rape committed against female immigrants from Latin America at some point during their journey to the U.S. border.

And Trump minced no words when O’Reilly asked him if he feels NBC News is biased against conservatives. For Trump, the question became an opportunity to blast NBC’s Chuck Todd for the way he looks.

“Do you believe there is an anti-conservative bias at NBC?” O’Reilly asked him.

“Absolutely,” Trump said. “You have sleepy eyes Chuck Todd who does ‘Meet the Press,’ which is failing in the ratings. You have all sorts of bias. MSNBC -- nobody watches it, but it’s a total disaster in terms of bias.”

He’ll sue everybody. Trump is now suing Univision for damages of up to $500 million for breaching a contract that Trump says is ironclad. He says it does not permit Univision to simply drop his “Miss USA Pageant” whenever Univision feels like it, and no matter what Trump says about Mexicans or any other Latin American group presumably. Trump’s a rich guy with the deep pockets necessary to practice this brand of “litigation diplomacy.”

One can foresee the lawsuits flying all over the place -- against Russia, against China, against Cuba, Venezuela, Iran, and just about any other country whose interests collide with those of the United States.

One reason not to support Trump for president: No more “Celebrity Apprentice.” This seems like a very steep price to pay in exchange for installing Trump in the White House. Oops, I mean the renamed Trump White House and Country Club.
