Databricks To Acquire AI Platform MosaicML For $1.3 Billion

Data/AI company Databricks, has signed a deal to acquire MosaicML, a generative AI platform, for $1.3 billion.

The entire MosaicML team is expected to join Databricks when the transaction closes, and its technology will be integrated with Databricks’ Lakehouse platform. This will include its research staff.

One report says the transaction will be largely in stock.

MosaicML offers MPT large language models (LLMs) and reports over 3.3 million downloads of MPT-7B and the recent release of MPT-30B.

The firm serves such brands as AI2 (Allen Institute for AI), Generally Intelligent, Hippocratic AI, Replit and Scatter Labs.

Together, the two firms have an opportunity to “democratize AI and make the Lakehouse the best place to build generative AI and LLMs," says Ali Ghodsi, co-founder and CEO of Databricks.

The combined platforms will address a broad range of AI use cases.

MosaicML “believes in a world where everyone is empowered to build and train their own models, imbued with their own opinions and viewpoints — and joining forces with Databricks will help us make that belief a reality," says Naveen Rao, co-founder and CEO of MosaicML.

Recently, Databricks formed partnerships with several firms including Twilio, Dell, Oracle and Cloudflare, in an effort to grow what it calls its data-sharing ecosystem.
