• Revlon Files For Bankruptcy Protection
    Beauty brand icon Revlon has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. “Revlon failed to keep pace with changing tastes, slow to follow women as they traded flashy red lipstick for more muted tones in the 1990s,” per The Associated Press. “In addition to losing market share to big rivals like Procter & Gamble, newcomer cosmetic lines from Kylie Jenner and other celebrities successfully capitalized on the massive social media following of the famous faces that fronted the products.”
  • Target 'Deal Days' Challenges Amazon
    Target is bringing back its “Deal Days” July 11-13 and once again competing with Amazon’s Prime Days. Last year, Target held Deal Days from June 20-22, extending on Prime Day’s June 21-22 dates. “Deal Days comes as Target aims to right-size its inventory assortment in the second quarter, which will include tactics such as markdowns, order cancellations and taking a more conservative approach to buying home goods,” per Sourcing Journal
  • Consumers Can Shop For GM Vehicles On App
    A recent update to the General Motors apps for each division allows users to to shop for new vehicles and browse available deals and offers on certain models. Current vehicle owners who use MyChevrolet, MyBuick, MyGMC and MyCadillac will now see a tab for a “MyWay” section that takes them to an option to engage in a live tour of their preferred vehicle as well as a tab to search inventory. A “Shop” tab also offers information about how to purchase OnStar and connected services as well as accessories and parts. 
  • Little Caesars NFL Sponsorship Prompts Tweets
    Twitter users took to the platform to discuss Detroit-based Little Caesars taking over for Pizza Hut as the official pizza of the NFL. One post proclaimed “there is now a brand that ‘out-pizzas the Hut.”' Some took issue with the quality of the pizza. “"If you don't eat Little Caesars pizza within 15 minutes of buying it you might as well put some pepperoni on a Terry Bradshaw game worn jersey and eat it,” one user tweeted. But another noted: "Anyone on here hating on Little Caesars clearly has never had their Crazy Bread."  
  • Amazon Announces Prime Days
    Amazon will hold its Prime Days sales discount event on July 12 and 13. Discounts will be offered on electronics, toys, home goods, clothing and other items. “Last year's sales spectacular, which returned to its usual summer perch, was the biggest two-day sales period for third-party sellers in the company's history,” per CNN. “Online spending during the event surpassed $11 billion, a 6.1% increase compared to Prime Day 2020, which was held in October, according to Adobe Analytics.”
  • Spotify Survived Joe Rogan Controversy
    Spotify has gathered a group of notable artists to play on its behalf at the “Spotify Beach” at Cannes. “It’s a notable show of strength given that it was less than six months ago that a lengthy dispute over the show of its mega-podcaster Joe Rogan spreading COVID-19 vaccine-related misinformation led to Neil Young bailing on the platform,” per Fast Company. “When Joni Mitchell and David Crosby followed suit, it looked like things could snowball. But, by and large, Spotify held fast—Rogan hasn’t gone anywhere—and its all-star presence at Cannes feels like a declaration.”
  • Mastercard Predicts Rise In Back-To-School Shopping
    Retail sales are expected to grow 7.5% from mid-July through Labor Day, according to Mastercard SpendingPulse. Sales are anticipated to increase 18.3% compared to pre-pandemic 2019. “Department stores are expected to be a noteworthy back-to-school winner as the sector continues its recent rebound with 15 consecutive months of sustained growth,” per Chain Store Age. “Another winner will be physical retail as consumers return to stores to try on new sizes and browse the latest fashions in person. In-store shopping is expected to grow 8.2% year-over-year and 9.9% compared to 2019.”
  • Peloton Rival Tonal Adds NYC Studio
    Peloton rival Tonal is opening a New York studio to expand its live class offerings, and adding five new coaches to its lineup. “Tonal is one of the major players in the connected fitness industry with a valuation of roughly $1.6 billion,” per The Verge. “Its $3,000 strength training system is backed by several professional athletes, including Maria Sharapova, Mike Tyson, and Drew Brees.” The company introduction of live classes in September was an answer to a growing demand and a popular feature from Peloton, which has been struggling as of late. 
  • Delta Expands Menu To Include Cold Brew, Sundaes
    Delta Air Lines is adding some options for on-board refreshments. “The carrier has partnered with several woman- and LGBTQ-led small businesses to bring new selections to the inflight offerings,” per Afar. New options include Explorer cold brew, Thrive Farmers teas, Une Femme sparkling wine, Tip Top Proper canned old fashioned and margaritas, Kona Brewing Big Wave Golden Ale, Harvest Cheddar Sunchips, Kate’s Real Food lemon coconut bars and sundaes featuring High Road Craft ice cream. New seasonal menus will include a harissa-spiced (meatless) Impossible burger, shrimp poke bowl, beef brisket, and burrata salad with tomatoes.
  • North Carolina Republicans Want To Ban Free EV Chargers
    Four Republican state senators introduced a bill in North Carolina that would prohibit EV owners from getting free charges at the grocery store or library unless those places also offered free gas and diesel. “Yes, members of the party that decries the participation award generation are demanding free stuff from both private and public spaces based on their personal car buying choices,” per Jalopnik. “Not only would the bill require locations that offer free charging to offer free gas, but would require the removal of EV chargers [for] locations that did not adhere to these demands.”
