'Politico' Drills Deeper Into Washington With Playbook Plus

Politico has added a new site to its franchise newsletter Playbook to give readers real-time updates on political news.

The new, mobile-first site, Playbook Plus, will be curated by Anna Palmer, Jake Sherman and Daniel Lippman. The site is sponsored by Comcast NBCUniversal. It will give subscribers updates outside Playbook’s daily newsletter cycle, in the form of a “a real-time diary” of the goings on in Washington D.C.

Playbook Plus will spotlight breaking news, as well as in-depth interviews and “quick-hit introductions” of the big names in D.C. politics.

It also includes a Playbook Power Lunch, a midday update and round-up of tbreaking news, and quick takes on stories of the day. The social elements include birthday Q&As with key D.C. people and videos and photos from Playbook events.

"If Playbook is about who and what is winning the morning, Playbook Plus is about what's buzzing the rest of the day,” Sherman stated.

This summer, Playbook’s contributor of nearly 10 years, Mike Allen, decided to leave Politico with CEO Jim VandeHei and other executives to start a new political publication.

Sherman and Palmer have since jumped on the project to assist Lippman, who worked with Allen on Playbook, and made efforts to push its content on social media and update readers throughout the day.

A Politico spokesperson told Publishers Daily that Playbook Plus will serve as “a home” for Playbook’s expanded coverage and content, as it moves forward. This year, Playbook got a dedicated presence on Politico.com.

A version of Playbook Plus launched for Politico’s Brussels hub this spring.
