Vaseline Tweet Goes Viral

Vaseline has become an out-of-left-field viral sensation for a tweet celebrating the practice of “slugging.”

As Vaseline’s website explains, slugging originally involved putting snails on your face. As they left mucus, the result resulted in “a refreshing glow.” Instead of snails, Vaseline advocates using a thin layer of Vaseline “as the last step in your nighttime skincare routine" to "create a layer on the surface of your skin that keeps water and skin’s natural oils (sebum) locked in."

Vaseline doesn’t mention putting the product anywhere else but your face, but the tweet, showing two doughnuts -- one plain, one frosted -- led to other conclusions.

Someone on Twitter replied, “This post is insane. This is literally a dry asshole vs lubed up asshole.”

On Twitter, Vaseline followed up by saying, “Y’all, we were talking about skincare. Thanks for making this weird.”

Nevertheless, the tweet has generated more than 5.4 million views and made #slugging a trending topic.

Among the most-viral tweets of all time, the No. 1 was from the family of actor Chadwick Boseman after his death in 2020. That tweet received 6.9 million likes.
