How AI Can Make Us More Human Over the Holidays

In the bustling landscape of creative and marketing agencies, the holiday season brings a unique blend of excitement and exhaustion. With the end-of-year rush, agencies servicing clients across industries often find themselves caught in a whirlwind of deadlines and deliverables. However, the advent of Artificial Intelligence (AI) offers a promising avenue for agencies to not only enhance their client work but also ensure their employees enjoy a well-deserved holiday break and come back rested, recharged, and ready for 2024.

AI: A Tool for Enhanced Efficiency and Employee Well-being

Like a hammer, which can either construct or demolish, AI's impact is defined by its use. Used wisely, AI can be a powerful ally for agencies, helping to streamline processes, enhance creativity, and importantly, allow employees to have a more balanced holiday season. In doing so, it not only augments the agency-client relationship but also fosters a healthier, more engaged workforce.

While AI offers numerous benefits, its implementation must be thoughtful and human-centric. It's vital to remember that AI is a tool to augment human capabilities, not replace them. Therefore, agencies should focus on:

  • Training employees to work effectively with AI tools, ensuring they understand how to leverage these technologies to enhance their work and reduce stress.

  • Establishing clear guidelines and ethical considerations, especially in terms of data privacy and creative integrity.

  • Encouraging open communication and feedback channels to understand employee experiences with AI tools and continuously improve their application.

With that in mind, here are pragmatic ways in which AI can be harnessed and easily implemented to benefit agency employees during the holiday season:

Enhancing Creativity and Reducing Burnout: AI's role in automating repetitive tasks such as data analysis, basic design iterations, and preliminary content creation is pivotal in enhancing agency creativity. By handling these time-consuming tasks, AI tools like Canva’s AI features and Shutterstock's AI image generator free human creatives to engage in deeper conceptual thinking.

At Spark, we are witnessing a 40% reduction in time spent on social content creation by automating some of our more repetitive tasks as part of this process. For a larger industry context, HubSpot’s recent “State of AI Survey 2023” found that 78% of service professionals strongly agree that AI helps them focus on more critical tasks. I’d say that's pretty significant.

This type of shift is crucial in agencies combating the rising trend of employee burnout and declining productivity in creative fields. The focus is shifted from mundane tasks to more fulfilling and strategic work, where human insights and skills can truly shine. This change allows agency staff to spend more time on brainstorming and concept development, which are the aspects of their work they find most rewarding and stimulating.

Fostering Work-Life Balance with AI-Enabled Solutions: The holiday season should be a time for rest and rejuvenation. Agencies can use AI for client communication and project management, thus reducing the manual workload. Stagwell, one of the largest global advertising groups, is actively positioning AI as a primary component of its suite of martech tools to achieve better balance for its employees and clients. In general, Stagwell is using AI to analyze data for the purpose of saving time. Other applications include producing storyboards and reducing the costs for processing invoices, according to Chairman and CEO Mark Penn.

SAP, the global enterprise software company, reports manually processing an invoice costs $31 and takes 17 days. Using AI to streamline this process saves an average of 33% on invoice processing and improves productivity by 30%. These are prime and real-time examples of how AI-driven project management tools can streamline internal client needs and processes. This type of ingenuity and harnessing innovation aids in managing client expectations while giving employees more time to spend with their families. Moreover, AI-driven analytics can provide insights into employee work patterns, identifying those at risk of burnout and prompting timely interventions.

Facilitating Flexible Work Models and Healthy Agency Cultures: Integrating AI into routine tasks opens the door for more flexible work models, such as a minimized work schedule during the holiday season, which can seem paradoxical but realistically boost productivity and morale. For example, AI tools like ChatGPT are able to assist account and strategy teams in processing extensive research efficiently, leading to more time for strategic thinking and storytelling. Similarly, creative development tools like Midjourney can help agencies visualize ideas realistically, streamlining client presentations and reducing the time spent on mock-ups.

If used properly, images created are 75- to 95-percent ready to go and let designers retain control of their work. For busy shops, this type of tool is a godsend. In social media content creation, AI tools like AdobeAI and Grammarly offer support for teams to focus on creative concept development rather than tactical execution. This strategic use of AI not only boosts our productivity but also supports the feasibility of a four-day work week that can be a game-changer for employee mental health and routine, especially during this season. And by ensuring mandatory PTO during the holidays, backed by AI's efficiency, employees can truly disconnect, recharge, and return more engaged, without sacrificing productivity or client satisfaction. This approach promotes a healthier work-life balance, crucial for long-term employee well-being and agency success.

As we navigate the evolving landscape of AI in our creative and strategic endeavors, it's essential to continually remind ourselves that AI is a tool to enhance, not replace, our unique contributions. AI's ability to automate routine tasks and streamline processes is invaluable, particularly during the demanding holiday season, and can allow us to focus more on creativity and less on manual work. My own initial concerns about AI potentially overshadowing our creative inputs have shifted; I now see AI as a learner from our human experience, an enhancer of our effectiveness.

The holiday season, with its joy and challenges, is an ideal time for agencies to embrace AI not just for short-term efficiency but to ponder its long-term impact on our work and culture. This festive period is a prime opportunity for agencies to leverage AI in freeing up valuable time for employees and strengthening client relationships. However, the true potential of AI lies in its ability to regularly fuel innovation and enhance human creativity, leading to sustainable growth. As we step into the new year and beyond, I challenge agencies to delve deeper into AI's capabilities, harnessing it not just as a seasonal aid but as a cornerstone for a more innovative, creative, and productive future.
