Terry Tang has been named executive editor of Los Angeles Times, the first woman to lead the Times newsroom in its 142-year history.  

Tang has served as interim editor since Jan. 25. Among her recent moves are the promotion of Hector Becerra to managing editor and Maria L. La Ganga to deputy managing editor for California and Metro.

In January, Kevin Merida resigned as executive editor of the Times; this was followed by the departure of two managing editors, Shani Hilton and Sara Yasin. 

Tang joined the Times as an op-ed editor in 2019, and was named op-ed and Sunday Opinion editor in 2020. In 2022, she was appointed editor of the editorial page.

Prior to that, Tang was director of publications and editorial at the American Civil Liberties Union and served in various roles in 20 years at The New York Times.
