Progressive Auto Insurance Spots Target Younger Millennials With Quirky Pigeons

Arnold Worldwide, Progressive Auto Insurance's AOR, has a new campaign geared to drivers under 35. The pitch is that saving $750 is a big deal — and can be better spent on specialty items, like air travel, or essentials, such as groceries.

Two new animated pigeon characters relay that message for Progressive through banter in three spots: "Dream,"  "Smartwatch"  and "Mix It Up."  It's voiced by H. Jon Benjamin ("Archer") and Retta.

The stop-motion spots roll out on digital video and social content throughout the first quarter. The campaign was produced by Emmy-award-winning Nexus Studios and directed by Conor Finnegan.

Donnell Johnson, senior vice president, group creative director at Arnold, said: “Having an additional $750 nowadays to spend on yourself is a big deal. But if we were going to do an ‘imagine the possibilities’ trope, it needed to be surprising and feel like content-first. Enter animation, two amazing voices and human-like pigeons, just kicking it.”

Previous Progressive ads have featured Jon Hamm ("Mad Men") with Stephanie Courtney, who has played the brand's Flo character for over a decade.

Finnegan has done commercial work for Target, Macy’s and Crayola, as well as a mixed-media film for Android called "Rock, Paper, and Scissors" that ran at the Oscars. He also created a five-part puppetry comedy for Oatly about complexities of a plant-based lifestyle. He called the Progressive Insurance project "a real highlight."

The agency's work also includes Sam's Club, Chewy, Aura and ADP. In June 2023, PNC Bank named Arnold Worldwide as its integrated marketing and advertising AOR. Media strategy and planning will be handled by Havas Media Group.

Arnold Worldwide is a Havas Creative Group Company.
