The non-profit UK news outlet Open Democracy is working with reduced resources following the loss of critical funding, according to a report on Mediaite.

The nonprofit has cut its budget by 40% and last month reduced its staff by a third, the report says. 

In addition, the unionized staff has passed a vote of no confidence in CEO Satbir Singh and Board Chair Suzanna Taverne. And there have been frequent changes in leadership and fundraising and finance roles, Mediaite writes. 

The organization reported a £110,000 surplus for 2022, but now faces cutbacks. 

“Some major funders have undertaken strategic reviews and changed their priorities,” the group told NUJ, according to Press Gazette. “Others have their own financial challenges with higher costs due to inflation and worsening endowments; the rebuilding of some neglected relationships is slow and, in a climate of uncertainty with major elections forthcoming, many funders are deferring decisions.”
