Hyundai Hires Top Guns For Super Bowl 50

Eight-time Super Bowl advertiser Hyundai Motor America has gone big in Super Bowl games in recent years. The automaker, which will be back on Feb. 7 for the 50th anniversary Super Bowl game, is letting some of the cats out of the bag about who will direct its ads for Super Bowl 50, and which products it will spotlight.

The automaker has tapped Peter Berg from Pony Show Entertainment to direct a pair of the ads. He directed “Very Bad Things” and “Friday Night Lights” and developed the television version of “Friday Night Lights.”

Fredrik Bond of MJZ will direct a brand spot for Hyundai. Aaron Stoller -- who has directed spots for Hyundai in the past, specifically an ad for the 2014 World Cup -- and Janusz Kaminski from Biscuit Filmworks, will helm the fourth spot. Kaminski worked cameras on “Schindler’s List” and “Saving Private Ryan.”

Hyundai will run four new ads, with two 30-second ads to run in the first and second quarters of the game. During the pre-kick slot, Hyundai will run a new 60-second ad. And the Fountain Valley, California company will run another 60-second spot during the pre-game show.

Hyundai is the NFL's official car, SUV and luxury vehicle, a four-year deal signed in June. The automaker says the luxury sedan Genesis will be showcased in one spot, while the all-new 2017 Elantra -- currently the company’s best-selling vehicle -- will be introduced to the public in two separate ads.

Hyundai says two ads will highlight Elantra safety, technology and convenience; another will show the new Genesis design and features. Huntington Beach, Calif.-based Innocean U.S.A. is Hyundai’s agency of record.

Hyundai skipped Super Bowl XLIX this year, the most-watched T.V. ever with 114.4 million viewers, in which six automakers advertised, down from 11 the year before. Hyundai sibling Kia advertised -- as did BMW, Chrysler, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, and after an 18-year hiatus, Nissan.
