AWS Gets $4B Commitment From Pinterest To Power Visual Search

Pinterest has committed $4 billion to Amazon Web Services (AWS) through 2031 to power its next version of artificial intelligence (AI)-powered visual search. Today, its platform serves more than 600 monthly users worldwide.

The major expansion of the partnership is the largest infrastructure commitment in Pinterest’s history.

It is expected to accelerate the company’s AI roadmap, provide more responsive search and shopping experiences, and modernize the infrastructure powering the company's global visual search discovery platform.

"Pinterest is heavily investing in AI to make discovery more personal, visual and actionable for the hundreds of millions of people who use our platform every month," stated Pinterest CTO Matt Madrigal. "This expanded commitment with AWS gives us the compute flexibility, hardware optionality, and infrastructure efficiency to accelerate our AI vision."

The two companies have worked together since 2010. This new agreement is structured to support Pinterest's next phase of growth across AI model training, inference, and platform infrastructure.

AWS Vice President of Compute and Machine Learning Services Dave Brown said Pinterest has built "some of the most advanced visual AI systems on AWS."

"AWS compute and purpose-built silicon like Trainium and Graviton give Pinterest the price-performance to train and run AI models at massive scale across both training and inference," he stated. "This commitment provides Pinterest the AI infrastructure to move faster and deliver new experiences to users sooner."

The advanced technology includes Pinterest's Taste Graph, a multimodal AI structure trained on billions of images, videos, and text.

The Taste Graph powers recommendation systems across the platform, mapping connections between user interests and content to generate personalized discovery feeds.

Beyond organic discovery, Pinterest’s Taste Graph powers ad tools like Performance+, launched in October 2024, with early results showing improved cost per acquisition by 10% for most advertisers and cut campaign setup time by 50%. By Q1 2026, it drove 30% of Pinterest’s lower-funnel revenue. The Taste Graph also powers Promote a Pin, which launched March 24, 2026.

As part of the expanded AWS agreement, Pinterest plans to use Amazon's custom silicon semiconductor chips.

This includes AWS Trainium to host and run large language models (LLMs) and vision-language models that power experiences such as personalized visual search and AI-assisted discovery.

It also plans to expand the use of Graviton, which already powers roughly a third of the company’s compute infrastructure, to run more of the systems that support discovery for more than 600 million people every month.

Together, these investments are expected to give Pinterest greater flexibility to match infrastructure to evolving AI needs.

Graviton is a family of custom-designed, 64-bit ARM-based CPUs developed by Amazon to provide the best price performance and energy efficiency for cloud processing.
